Dumbaâs sights set on Canada
Dumba’s sights set on Canada
November 13, 2012

Written by Jesse Michael for the Canadian Hockey League

Matt Dumba does not want to go through the heartbreak he felt last December ever again.

The then 17, now 18-year old Red Deer Rebels defenceman was amongst the players cut from the World Junior tryout camp, but says that moment helped him mature as a player.

“It was a tough experience but I’ve come a long way from that…I’m focused on finding that consistency,” said Dumba.  “Hopefully that furthers me and puts me above the rest.  I just need to work hard and show how much I want to be there [at the World Juniors] and hopefully things go my way this time.”

Dumba will have another shot to impress the Team Canada brass as he was selected to the WHL’s roster for the SUBWAY Super Series, for the second time in as many years, and he is excited for the opportunity.

“It was my second year being selected and it’s such a privilege,” he said.  “I really just want to show that I deserve to be at the World Junior selection camp.  It’s the final step towards that and I’m looking forward to it.”

Having gone through the experience last year, he will be leaned on more this time around to be one of the leaders of the team.

When asked about what he can do to help Team WHL come together in such a short time period, Dumba said that they need to play with a high level of confidence from the moment they step on the ice.

“There’s always going to be errors,” he said.  “But it’s just how you handle them and use them to channel your focus and your energy for the game and make a smart presence.  We just need to go out and work hard and lead by example.”

And leading by example is one of Dumba’s strongest traits, which is something the players he will be competing with in the event notice as well.

“Matt’s a very good leader.  I’ve played with him on a few teams more specifically at the Under-17 tournament,” said Victoria Royals center Steven Hodges.  “He’s a quiet guy but when he needs to he speaks up and leads by example.  He’s a good competitor, works hard every night, and is someone that all the guys can look up to and follow.”

Dumba backed up Hodges’ comments, saying that he embraces the leadership role that has been bestowed on him.

“Whenever guys will come to you it’s always an opportunity to do that [be a leader],” he said.  “The best way to do that is by competing and show your battle level, and once you have the opportunity to be talkative and communicate that way you have to have the respect from your teammates.”

While Dumba may be relied upon to provide some valuable information to his teammates heading into both games five and six, he will have some help on the back end to share the load as both Griffin Reinhart and Morgan Rielly will also be competing in their second SUBWAY Super Series event.

“Whenever you’re playing with better players it almost seems easier,” Dumba said.  “They hold the puck so well so you’re able to focus on what you’re doing and worry less about what your teammates are doing.  The game becomes really simple when you have a crop of players that are this elite.”

Reinhart is also just one of the players from the Edmonton Oil Kings that Dumba is looking forward to competing with.

“We face the Edmonton boys quite a bit here in Red Deer so it will be nice to play with them,” he said.  It will also be nice to play with Ty Rattie; he’s a great player and has lots of speed.  There are a lot of great players that I could just go down the list of who would be fun to play with.”

Dumba and the rest of his Team WHL teammates get their first shot against Team Russia on Wednesday, November 14 live on Sportsnet at 10pm Eastern, 7pm Pacific, with game six scheduled for Thursday November 15 in Victoria.  Check out full coverage details at www.subwaysuperseries.ca
